Fast & Furiosa #9001
Years playing derby: 10 months, 25 days, and counting
Skating with MRD since: May 2015
How do you spend your time off the track? By day, I'm a USAF Captain and an instructor at Maxwell AFB. At night and on weekends, I'm a phenomenal mom to my four-legged kids, a motorcyclist, a sleep-junkie, a procrastinating student, and an adventurer with my fiance as my sidekick.
What made you want to play derby/join the MRD family? In high school, I got a kick out of the movie Whip It and promptly added derby to my bucket list. Fast forward a few years and, after moving back to the Gump, I missed having a competitive athletic outlet. On a whim, I searched for a derby team in the area and was pleasantly surprised to discover MRD. After my first practice, I was hooked.
What do you love about it? I love how completely challenging it is. Skating is an unnatural act to begin with but derby skating can be terrifying. Staying up on your skates isn't enough. You know you'll hit and be hit; you know you will fall, sometimes hard. But derby girls get up, they get knocked down, and they get up again. The adrenaline rush and exhilaration of beating those physical and mental challenges is fantastically reaffirming--not only for yourself but also for your teammates.
